Applying for a Home Education Application in New Zealand

An overview of how to apply to home educate your child in New Zealand.

Firstly, for a more comprehensive overview on applying to home  education, I recommend visiting NCHENZ – Applying for an exemption.

In order to legally home educate your child(ren), each family/caregiver needs apply to home education with the Ministry of Education. This involves completing a comprehensive written application which covers your approach or philosophy to home educating, how you expect your child to learn within each subject area, providing enough broad content to cover the next 12 months. This also includes forming specific and achievable goals for each learning area and listing the resources you have available to support that learning. You will need to write a Special Topic Project – usually an interest led project that integrates a range of learning areas and modes of learning, outlining the sequence of learning experiences and desired outcome. There are also short sections on how you will monitor and evaluate your child’s learning, whether you will delegate any of your child’s education (e.g., forest school, tutors, extra-curricular classes) and where you must show a timetable or similar to demonstrate how each learning area will be covered across a week or fortnight.

In order to complete this, much reflection and research is recommended. Some people have the time, capacity and confidence to write this on their own, whereas others do not. This is where I come in!

Myself and a few other home education consultants in New Zealand provide services supporting families to complete their application and move on with the exciting and liberating journey of educating their child.

I offer different tiers of support depending on the support needs and budget of my clients. From my $25 DIY “Unschooling Getting Started Package”, to my “Full Unschooling Writing Package”, where I have a comprehensive chat with you to find out all about your child and your hopes and plans and do the writing part for you.
